Pune Warriors get Ganguly: Showdown with Kolkata Knight Riders on 19th May

Sourav Ganguly is back into the IPL. Ignored by all the teams in the initial auction and then not allowed into the IPL because of various technicalities, Ganguly looked all set to sit out IPL 2011.

But it seems destiny is going to give Ganguly another go at it and Pune Warriors India have inducted Ganguly into their team as replacement for Ashish Nehra (who was ruled out because of injury during World Cup semi final in Mohali against Pakistan).

Pune Warriors India are at the moment have put up 6 consecutive losses and led by Yuvraj Singh. The team is will need some of the old ‘dada’ aggression to get back some respectability in this season.

Pune Warriors will play Kolkatta Knight Riders at Navi Mumbai on May 19th 2011. The match is scheduled to start at 8 PM IST.

This should a real showdown between Ganguly and the team that ignored him this season.

The match unfortunately will be held in Navi Mumbai, at the DY Patil Stadium. It would have been interesting Ganguly opening the innings against KKR bowlers at Eden Gardens.

Anyways hopefully Pune Warriors will win and Ganguly will score a lot of runs against KKR. 😉

Life of Sachin Tendulkar [Infographic]

Sachin Tendulkar was 16 when he made his debut and watching him on TV, I was only nine years old. Since then, my favourite cricketer has been Tendulkar and almost 22 years later he still remains my favorite.

He is probably the only current cricketer still playing who also played in the late 1980s.

Here is an infographic which celebrates the master blaster turning 38.

Bangladesh obliges India, England and West-Indies by crashing out of World Cup!

Indian cricket team started the World Cup against Bangladesh. They won comfortably, but their tied match (even after scoring 330+ runs) against England and their loss to South Africa (where they lost 9 wickets for 29 runs) had left them with 7 points with one more match to go.

Frankly, other than the match against England and Bangladesh, Indian batting has looked pathetic.

But thankfully, Bangladesh has obliged England, India and West-Indies by losing to the mighty South Africans. Now Bangladesh is stuck on 6 points but with such a bad net-run rate that their hopes lie in India beating West-Indies by 100s of runs or by chasing the entire West Indian total in 5 overs. With our boys in such glorious form, it we can consider it a impossibility.

The quarter-final scenarios for India!

India can either come in 2nd in the group with 9 points or lose to West Indies and end up 3rd.

  • If India is second in the group they will play Australia or New Zealand in the QFs.
  • If India ends up third they play Sri Lanka in the QFs.
  • India whatever happens will not play against Pakistan in the Quarter Finals.

Wow, lets see how this drama unfolds on Sunday, 20th March 2011 in Chennai.

Sehwag ‘Upar Cuts’ Bangladesh for a Six!

Bangladesh were probably hoping for a repeat of the 2007 World Cup. They had beaten India and knocked them out of the tournament. Back then they had bowled first and restricted India to a modest total.

Similar thoughts might have been going through the Bangladesh team’s minds when they won the toss and put India to bat.

Unfortunately they ran into Sehwag, who literally hit their hopes for a six. Sehwag score 175 runs of 140 balls. He also hit 14 boundaries and 5 sixes.

[Cricket History] 5 Different Cricket World Cup Trophies!

The World Cup fever is reaching a nice crescendo and we will soon have 14 teams trying to outdo each other for the being called the World Champions. The coveted World Championship trophy is not really as old as the competition. As a matter for fact the World Cup was first held in 1975, while the first time the current trophy was presented to the winning team was in 1999, a good 24 years later!

The Prudential Cup

The first 3 editions of the World Cup were help in England in 1975, 1979 and 1983. The trophy and cup were sponsored by Prudential. The first two editions were won by the mighty West-Indies. The 3rd edition featured West-Indies again but India managed an upset and saw Kapil Dev lift up the Prudential Cup.

The Reliance Cup

The World Cup was moved out of England and into the sub-continent in 1987. The hosts were India and Pakistan while the new sponsors were Reliance.

Australia with a young, athletic and aggressive team ended up winning the cup and with that started one of the greatest era of Australian cricket.

Benson & Hedges World Cup

The World Cup in 1992, moved down-under in Australia and New Zealand. It was the first time all the matches were played with coloured clothing and with a white cricket ball. This tournament featured 9 teams and Pakistan won the cup with some inspiring captaincy by Imran Khan. The trophy was made of crystal and is the only trophy which does not have any type of metal on it.

Wills World Cup

The World Cup was again held in India, Pakistan and Sri-Lanka. The tournament had 12 teams for the first times and also quarter-finals. Arjuna Ranatunga led an unbeaten Sri Lankan side to become World Champions in 1996. This was the only time when a co-host team won the world cup.

ICC World Cup trophy

The World Cup trophy until 1996 was closely associated and named after sponsors. ICC decided to have a unique constant trophy which was not changed very 4 years.

This trophy will probably be used for a another 40 years. What are you views on the various trophies that were part of World Cup history? Which one is your favorite? Do drop in your comments.
